Demo Reel 2011
I'm excited to finally showcase my animation demo reel. I put this together back in the winter. Seams like now would be a good time to post it. Time to start working on a new one!

Happy Mother's Day!

Well, I'll admit. This is an image for the film BUT it is oddly appropriate considering the holiday don't you think?
We're getting down to the wire here at school with finals (and graduation)only three weeks away, but boy is time escaping me quickly. "Emma and Molly's Pet Yeti" is making steady progress. The portion of the film that we're going to put in the senior showcase is almost complete! All that's left is cleanup, color, and a few more backgrounds. Here's a composite test that I just recently uploaded to vimeo. Unfortunately I won't be able to load the whole film onto the internet until the festival circuit is complete but I'll continue to delight you all with a wide variety of "sneak peaks" until then (like I've been doing :D) Enjoy!

Senior Film - Animation and Clean-up Test
I finally finished this shot over the weekend. This is a sample of finished clean-up animation without the color. I'm painting the BG for this shot tonight so I have a final composite test to show here in the next few days. Oh I'm so excited! This film is finally starting to come together.
Sadly the animation cuts off at the end. I'll try to get a better version up soon.

Senior Film Composite Look
Well, I keep learning new things with each EMPY illustration I complete. I think I'm getting closer to finding a final look for the film, but I'm going to keep experimenting just in case I discover something more awesome! This image is a little convoluted. Too much going on. The eye isn't successfully led throughout the image. So still need to work on my compositional skills. One illustration at a time I guess.

Senior Film Animatic
Senior Film Animatic - Emma and Molly's Pet Yeti from Matt Doering on Vimeo.
Well it's about time I update this blog. Sorry everyone. Senior year is driving me NUTS! "Emma and Molly's Pet Yeti" is keeping me plenty busy. So much animation to do in such a short amount of time. May will be hear before we know it.On the note of Senior Film, I'd like to present my senior film animatic! I finished it up last weekend, and am already working on edits and fixes (as if six rewrites and storyboarding the thing twice wasn't enough (I guess that's the joy of film-making T_T)). I'm extremely excited about the direction the story is headed, and can't wait to start production. I have a large and wonderful team ready to start working.
Please feel free to comment and make suggestions. Lord knows I don't catch everything. I want to make sure all loose ends are tied up before my animators and I throw ourselves head first into animating. Thanks everyone!

King Hubert
I finally finshed my 2D Character Animation 1 final. This is thankfully my first successful dialogue piece which required a ton of planning an practice drawings. It's King Hubert from Sleeping Beauty who's supposed to be scolding the drunk minstrel, but flash didn't compress the file too cleanly. Oh well. This is just a rough version. Hopefully I'll have time over the summer to clean it up and make it look extra pretty for my demo reel. :D

Yzma Attempts to Lift Her Purse
Okay, so I was going to wait until this animation was completely finished before posting it on the blog, but I can't hold in my excitement much longer. I decided it would be fun to animate Yzma from the Disney film, "The Emperor's New Groove," for the heavy-lifting assignment for my 2D Character Animation 1 course, and so far I'm having a blast. This animation is fairly rough. She's missing a face, and a few of her in-betweens toward the end aren't finished, but her movement is there and that's what I'm most excited about. This is really my first crack at full character animation. Of course I did have a little experience with the Mushu head turn, and I animated the dessert-stranded flour sack in Animation 1, but really this is it. I couldn't be happier with the results thus far. I'm quickly starting to fall in love with Character Animation. Oh no!
Since I'm still in the tweaking phase, I'm definitely open to suggestions and critique. I want this to be a good piece for my demo real.

Mushu Head-Turn Animation
Finally! I just finished tweaking my Mushu Head-turn assignment for my Character Animation class. I would have posted it earlier, but there was too much to fix. I still want to go back and mess with the ear a bit more. If you can't tell already, I'm extremely picky. I'll be posting so some life-drawings this week some time. My speed sketching class is completely revolutionizing the way I approach drawing. I'm really excited about the class, and I'm already starting to make some major improvement.

Look what else I found!
Today starts the beginning of a new quarter. So after a week long break of vegging I should have some new artwork to post soon. In the mean time, here's another blast from the past to wet your whistles. This is my final project for Animation 1 this past fall.
Note: You might have to play the video twice. Sometimes it plays fast the first time.

Screen Shots from my Short Film

Well through a random series of emotionally devastating events, I was not able to finish my short film for finals because my flash drive fell out of a hole in my pocket. This flash drive contained ALL of my files from my Digital Cel Animation class, including all of the files for my short film. Praise God that my flash drive was recovered. Unfortunately it was after our final class for the quarter, and after I had withdrawn from the course. I'm upset that I won't receive course credit for the work, but at the same time I'm just glad to have my work back in my possession. I felt like a member of my family had died. All is well. I'll spend the first few weeks of next quarter working on the film, improving it, and finishing it. I've worked too hard to just let it go by the wayside. Above are a few screen shots from the film. Enjoy!

Girl on a Pogo Stick Animation
Here's the finished animation of the girl on the pogo stick from the previous post. I had fun animating the character but alas, it took much longer than I anticipated to complete, which seems to be the problem I'm having with all of my projects this quarter. The feeling of being screwed is becoming pervasive. Oh well.

Flash Animations
I'm sorry that it's been a while since I last updated. Last week was pure hell in terms of getting assignments done, and I've been lazy all weekend long, and am going to have a hellish week this week too. But I have several blog entries coming here in the next few days. Right now I have a few of the animations I've been working on for my flash animation class, tomorrow I'll upload the three pages of pencils I've been working on for my sequential art class, and then I have some pictures from Disney World and other shenanigans to post. Also a few more Japan posts are on the way too (finally). It took me long enough right. Enjoy the animations!
