Silhouettes

Ah, yes. Silhouettes. I’m not as adept to character design as I’d like to be. It’s difficult for me to create interesting shapes for my characters. So recently I’ve started designing characters with the silhouette first, completely skipping the details. I’ve found this process very liberating, and it actually speeds up the character design process significantly. If you think about it, a silhouette is very easy to manipulate and takes little to no time to create an initial drawing. You can quickly evaluate straights vs curves., proportions, and overall structure. There are no details to get bogged down by or attached to. It’s simply exploring shape, and character essence.

I’ve been toying around with a short film idea involving birds. Here are a few quick silhouette studies. Enjoy!

Matt, I love all of these! It's great to see that you still have time to work on your own side projects. My favorite is the tall, skinny bird, btw. :)
